The City also is proud of the tremendous quality of life offered to its residents. Troy is home to a number of family friendly attractions and events such as the historic Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, featuring world renowned acoustics and an eclectic array of concerts by national and international artists. Events like the Annual Troy Victorian Stroll transform the historic streets of downtown Troy into a magical stage of song, dance and family enjoyment, bringing the Victorian Era back to life. Free summer time festivals such as the River Street Festival, Rockin’ On The River, Chowder Fest and the Troy Pig Out offer fun for the entire family, all for free. The Arts Center of the Capital Region annually welcomes more 70,000 artists, patrons, students and performers at its 36,000-square-foot facility in Monument Square, or wholesome shopping at the Waterfront Farmer’s Market, Troy offers a variety of activities appealing to people of all ages and interests.

  • Big budget Hollywood productions and independent and documentary films have frequently used Troy and Rensselaer County as a backdrop. The City’s charm and good looks have graced the big screen in Ghost Story, Scent of A Woman, Age of Innocence, Ironweed, The Time Machine and The Emperor’s Club.
     
  • The patriotic "Yankee Doodle," a wartime marching song, is said to have been composed at the Van Rensselaer Manor House, Fort Crailo, in the City of Rensselaer, where today a museum commemorates the legend.
     
  • The American classic, "Twas the Night Before Christmas," was penned in 1823 by Clement Clarke Moore and published in the Troy Sentinel. A plaque located on historic River Street in the antiques district, marks the site of the former newspaper building.
     
  • Rensselaer County has more authentic Tiffany brand windows per square mile than anywhere else. Some of the finest examples are installed at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Troy, built in 1826 and remodeled by the Tiffany Glass and Decoration Co. in the 1890s. The church's windows attract enthusiasts from all over the globe.
