Dearborn wins the Third Annual Henrietta Award.

The Henrietta Award was created by The Arc of Rensselaer County in 2022 so that we could pause, reflect, and share our story. Our story is that we believe people should be included in society and given the opportunity to have choices and pursue their own dreams and goals. This was started in living rooms by parents and family members.

Henrietta Messier was one of the Founders and Leaders and inspired others, but she did not light the path alone; she had help from many Arc Community Members. One of those community members is this year’s recipient, Diane Dearborn.

Diane Dearborn used her skills and talents to drive change and initiatives while following the necessary rules and guidelines. Diane’s tireless dedication helped individual children and families thrive and strengthened the entire community by fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for students with disabilities.

As a Parent Advocate for the Troy Schools, Diane empowered parents to find their voices and supported them in organizing their children's paperwork. A family member's quote about Diane is, “She made me a better advocate, well, even a better parent.” As the Chair of the Guardianship Committee, she advocated for and supported individuals who may not be able to make certain decisions independently. She was a steward of their rights, well-being, and personal wishes and advocated for their healthcare.

“Diane’s impact on our community was immeasurable and multifaceted”, said Don Mullin, CEO. “Heroes are those who selflessly help strangers, expecting nothing in return; that summed up Diane to the core.

The Arc of Rensselaer County was formed almost 75 years ago and works to influence societal attitudes and governmental policy so that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities will have access to the services, assistance, and opportunities they need for personal growth, development, and participation in the community.
