Port of Albany Facility Director Kosa elected to international maritime environmental association Green Marine Advisory Committee

(April 27, 2026) The Port of Albany-Rensselaer was the first port in New York state to volunteer and certify in the Green Marine program and has continued to meet the environmentally forward benchmarks with consistent and consecutive Green Marine certifications since 2016.

This year, Port Director of Operations and Facilities John C. Kosa was elected to the Green Marine North Atlantic Advisory Committee which represents the Canadian Atlantic provinces and Northeastern United States which spans from Newfoundland’s easternmost tip westward to Belledune, New Brunswick, and north and south between Newfoundland and Norfolk, Virginia.

The Green Marine Advisory Committee oversees the implementation, development, and revision of the Green Marine environmental program, and advises on and makes recommendations to the Green Marine Secretariat regarding the program's development including priority environmental issues, regional environmental issues, performance indicators for all categories of participants, communications, and more. Kosa will again be representing the Port of Albany at Green Marine’s GreenTech conference this year in Quebec City, Canada.

Green Marine is a leading voluntary international program for the maritime industry that advocates environmental practices and enhancements and provides a comprehensive framework for ports and maritime companies to assess and improve their environmental performance. Participants must demonstrate continual and measurable improvement year after year.

In his role at the Port, Kosa provides oversight of the maintenance team and of the more than 20 buildings throughout the Port District, ensures that appropriate strategic investments are planned and made to maintain necessary standards for Port’s operations, and oversees the Port of Albany Maritime Infrastructure Investment Project that includes more than $100M in upgrades and construction completed or underway, with upgrades on the northern portion of the heavy rail and on-dock wharf system. In progress. Construction is anticipated to continue through early 2027.

The Port’s Environmental Policy is to strive to conduct activities in a sustainable manner as defined as environmentally responsible, community-driven, and economically beneficial. Respecting the environment is important for the Hudson River watershed and neighboring communities in addition to the sustained operations of the Port.
