Averill Park High School’s Off Broadway Players Debut Original Student-Written Musical: Drama in the Den

Averill Park, NY — In an inspiring display of creativity and collaboration, Averill Park High School's Off Broadway Players are proud to present Drama in the Den, an original jukebox musical written by students, showcasing their exceptional talents in writing, acting, singing, and more. Performances will take place on February 6, 7, and 8, 2025, at 7:00 PM in the Averill Park High School auditorium.

Faced with unique challenges this year, including staffing transitions, a new choir teacher, and changes to the student pit band, the Off Broadway Players initially planned a Cabaret-style production. However, their determination to craft a more traditional and cohesive musical led to something extraordinary.

“After auditions, the students came together with an idea,” shared Theater Program Director, Ms. Monroe. “Instead of performing a collection of unrelated songs, they asked, ‘Why not tie these into one story?’ That spark of creativity set the stage for a fully student-written production.”

Three student writers took the lead, weaving the chosen songs into an engaging and heartfelt story. Guided by the feedback of their peers, their effort has resulted in a show reminiscent of a jukebox musical, highlighting favorite numbers from well-known Broadway productions while telling an original narrative.

The production team also benefited from the expertise of Mr. Reyes, a science teacher with professional technical theater experience, and a talented local set builder who stepped in to support the students’ vision. The cast and crew are hard at work in rehearsals, blending storytelling, music, and stagecraft to bring their creative vision to life.

Ms. Eliashuk, the school's new and dynamic choir teacher, praised the students' initiative. “This experience has been an incredible opportunity for skill-building and collaboration. It’s a joy to see students take ownership of this project and rise to the occasion.”

Drama in the Den promises to be an unforgettable theatrical event, celebrating the creativity and resilience of Averill Park High School's students. This spectacular original story features songs from iconic Broadway shows including: Les Miserables, Beetlejuice, Mean Girls, Fiddler on the Roof, Hadestown, Rent, Spring Awakening, Funny Girl, Hamilton, and Heathers. Don’t miss the chance to experience this one-of-a-kind production!
