DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  This is a professional position in Public Health Nursing Service and involves responsibility for coordinating individual patient care and for performing nursing services requiring substantial specialized judgment and skills.  The work is performed under the general supervision of a supervisory level nursing position.  Supervision may be exercised over the work of Licensed Practical Nurses and related auxiliary nursing personnel.

          A Community Health Registered Nurse also does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Provides skilled nursing assessment and develops nursing care plan for clients and families admitted to their care for health guidance, lead poisoning, children at risk of developmental delay or other service as needed under the guidance of the Public Health Nurse or Director of Patient Services;
  • Provides skilled nursing assessment, treatment and care to clients presenting to public health clinics for (including, but not limited to) immunizations, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV testing, chronic disease screening and tuberculosis as treatments are order by the Public Health Nurse Practitioner or the Medical Consultant;
  • Communicates with physicians and others involved in the client’s care to insure service coordination;
  • Refer clients to other agencies as appropriate;
  • Participates in data collection for epidemiological investigations, studies and surveys under the supervision/direction of the Public Health Nurse, Epidemiology Coordinator or the Director of Patient Services;
  • Compiles records for the documentation of client care and services provided, time accountability, statistical information, correspondence and written reports as required;
  • Provides group presentations regarding health promotion, disease prevention and public health principles as assigned;
  • Supervision may be exercised over the work of Licensed Practical Nurses and related auxiliary nursing personnel.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Good knowledge of nursing principals and techniques and their relation to medical and surgical practices; working knowledge of dietetics, sanitation and personal hygiene related to nursing care; ability and skill in the application of nursing technique practices; ability to understand and follow technical oral and written instructions; ability to keep records and make reports; tact and courtesy.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Graduation from a school of nursing approved by the State Education Department from a course approved by such department as qualifying for Registered Professional Nurse and one (1) year of clinical experience in nursing.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE OF APPLICATIONS:  Eligibility for license issued by the State of New York to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse.  Possession of license at time of appointment.

 

AND eligibility for a motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.  Possession of license at time of appointment and must maintain the license throughout the term of employment.
