Mosaic Associates wins Excelsior Award from AIANYS for Mackey Facilities Complex Reconstruction at SUNY Cobleskill

Troy, N.Y. – Troy-based Mosaic Associates has been recognized by AIA New York State with an Excelsior Award for its design work on the Mackey Facilities Complex Reconstruction Project at SUNY Cobleskill. The Excelsior Awards highlight the best in publicly funded buildings, outdoor areas, and public art across the state and the professionals who support and advocate for them.

The Cobleskill project involved the renovation of the college’s outdated facilities complex to reflect the importance of the function of the building and the team that works there. The $6.7 million renovation set out to elevate the presence and function of the outdated facility and had three important goals: stabilize the building envelope, replace aging mechanical systems, and improve the layout and function of the complex.

"SUNY Cobleskill is a major employer in Schoharie County, and many local employees are part of the team that is dedicated to keeping the campus both functioning and beautiful. It's gratifying to be part of making their workplace equal to the campus they oversee," said John Onderdonk, AIA, principal in charge of the project for Mosaic Associates.

Nine projects were recognized by AIA NYS for an award this year in the categories of renovation/addition, new construction, and landscape architecture.  An interdisciplinary jury evaluated the projects based on three criteria: firmness (demonstrating design based on sound architectural and engineering principles and responsible use of public funds to achieve the maximum public benefit), commodity (demonstrating design that is functional and impactful, providing socio-economic benefits to the community and advancing the owner’s mission), and delight (demonstrating design that achieves beauty and harmony through respect for the surrounding context, understanding and consideration of human scale, and satisfaction of user needs).

AIA New York State is the state component of the American Institute of Architects and is composed of 13 statewide chapters representing over 9,500 architecture professionals.
