Mohawk Hudson Humane Society Welcomes State Leaders, Receives $1.2 Million Commitment for Community Expansion Project
MENANDS, N.Y., The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (MHHS) welcomed New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Assemblymember Phil Steck to its Menands campus on July 14, where they announced a $1.2 million state investment toward the Society's proposed Behavioral Rehabilitation and Outreach Center (BROC). The funding represents a significant step forward for the transformative project, which will expand MHHS's ability to provide behavioral rehabilitation for animals, humane education, community training programs, and emergency sheltering.
“We are grateful to Speaker Heastie and Assemblymember Steck for taking the time to see firsthand how the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society serves both animals and people throughout the Capital Region,” said Ashley Jeffrey Bouck, President and CEO of the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. “The Behavioral Rehabilitation and Outreach Center represents the next chapter in our mission, expanding our capacity to rehabilitate vulnerable animals, provide education and training, and respond to emergencies when our community needs us most. Support from our state leaders helps move this vision closer to reality.”
During their visit, Speaker Heastie and Assemblymember Steck toured the Society's facilities and learned how MHHS supports thousands of animals and families each year through adoption, humane law enforcement, veterinary care, pet retention and community outreach programs.
The BROC will be the first major expansion of the Society's Animal Care Center in nearly a decade. The new facility will provide dedicated space for behavior and enrichment programs that help more animals become adoption-ready, expand educational opportunities for children and adults, and offer flexible emergency sheltering space when the community faces natural disasters or large-scale animal rescue situations.
“Rescue shelters like the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society are assets to the local community where abused, neglected and homeless animals receive the care they need to become adopted,” said Speaker Heastie. “I thank Assemblymember Steck for showing me this beloved Capital Region rescue shelter that provides critical services to ensure vulnerable animals find responsible and loving families.”

The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society is the Capital Region's largest animal welfare organization, serving thousands of animals and people each year through adoption, veterinary care, humane education, pet retention programs, humane law enforcement, and community outreach.
