AVERILL PARK, NY — Get ready for an evening of theatrical chaos, unexpected disasters, and plenty of laughs when the Averill Park Off-Broadway Players present The Play That Goes Wrong: High School Edition on Friday, November 20, and Saturday, November 21, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at Averill Park High School.
The Play That Goes Wrong is a fast-paced farce in which a fictional student theater company attempts to stage a 1920s murder mystery — with hilariously disastrous results. The show combines physical comedy, stage effects, a murder mystery, and a play-within-a-play to create a production where the mistakes are all part of the fun.
“The fun of The Play That Goes Wrong is that the audience gets to watch everything fall apart right along with the actors,” said Theatre Director Nicole Monroe. “It’s a challenging show for our students because the comedy depends on incredible timing, teamwork, and commitment, but it is also incredibly rewarding. I think audiences will be surprised by just how much work goes into making things go wrong!”
This year's production also features student leadership behind the scenes, with Sarah O’Brien and Vera Love serving as Student Co-Directors.
“We're excited to have the opportunity to take on a show that is so different from anything we've done before,” said Student Co-Director Sarah O’Brien. “There are so many moving parts, and every little detail matters. It's been really exciting to work with the cast and see the production come together.”
Student Co-Director Vera Love added, “One of the best parts of this show is that everyone has to fully commit to the chaos. The cast has worked incredibly hard, and we've had a lot of fun figuring out how to make all of the disasters look completely unexpected. We can't wait for the audience to experience it with us.”
The result is a comedy that invites audiences to laugh not only at the fictional actors' disastrous performance, but also at the remarkable skill required of the real-life student performers to pull off the chaos.
The Averill Park Off-Broadway Players invite families, friends, theater fans, and members of the community to come out and support the students as they take on this hilarious theatrical challenge.
