City of Rensselaer Promotes Safety of Workers

(May 06, 2026 – Rensselaer, New York) – During the week of May 4 – 8, 2026 the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is encouraging construction employers and workers nationwide to participate in the 13th annual National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction.

This seemed like a perfect week for the City of Rensselaer to provide Public Works and related employees with OSHA Safety Training. Over the next two weeks thirty-two employees will receive ten hours of training on how to prevent falls, working in confined spaces, working with electricity, working on roadways and utilizing personal protective equipment. Eleven of those employees with supervisory or managerial duties will receive twenty additional hours of in-depth training on identifying, avoiding, and preventing workplace hazards.

The training is funded by an Occupational Safety and Health Training and Education (OSH T&E) grant from the New York State Department of Labor (Contract # DOL01-T25037GM-3550000). Harrison Reid Safety and Consultants, Inc., a certified Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprise from New York City, was selected to provide the service through a competitive procurement.

“I’m most grateful to Governor Hochul, New York State and the Department of Labor for enabling the City of Rensselaer to provide this training to the employees that maintain, build, and operate essential community infrastructure, including roads, water systems, sewer systems, and public buildings and parks,” said John DeFrancesco, Mayor of the City of Rensselaer. “These staff are the backbone of our city and they will benefit from this safety training as they maintain and repair our roads, sidewalks, parks, utilities and other infrastructure,” added Mayor DeFrancesco.
