WMHT Public Media Debuts New Learning Center Honoring the Legacy of Late PBS Visionary Executive, Dr. Sylvia M. Bugg
TROY, NY - WMHT Public Media, the premier multichannel public broadcasting provider serving Eastern New York and Western New England, is proud to launch The Dr. Sylvia M. Bugg Learning Center, named in honor of the late PBS executive.
The Dr. Sylvia M. Bugg Learning Center is a vital community hub in New York’s Capital Region, dedicated to closing the digital divide and advancing educational equity for young learners. Operating in a safe, distraction-free environment, the center combines hands-on training with high-quality public media and interactive, self-paced STEM and early literacy curricula. This experiential space serves as an invaluable educational extension for local schools and alternative learning environments. It also provides a crucial community anchor for home-educated students, offering a structured, collaborative environment to socialize, conduct group experiments, and participate in peer-to-peer learning.
As Chief Programming Executive and General Manager of General Audience Programming at PBS, Dr. Sylvia M. Bugg’s visionary leadership cemented public media as a trusted pillar of knowledge, inspiration, and impactful storytelling. She leaves a profound legacy as a fierce champion for diversity, ensuring that programming reflected a wide spectrum of cultural perspectives. A lifelong advocate for education, Sylvia prioritized community-enriching content while constantly pursuing her own personal and professional growth.
“I am deeply honored to celebrate Sylvia’s incredible legacy through the launch of the Dr. Sylvia M. Bugg Learning Center at WMHT. Sylvia’s enduring commitment to education and her selflessness in helping others align perfectly with the very core of our mission. Dedicating the Learning Center in her name felt not just fitting, but essential—a true reflection of a life beautifully lived in service to others,” said Anthony V. Hayes, WMHT President and CEO. Dr. Bugg’s family made the trip from her native Virginia to attend the dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony at WMHT on October 2nd.
“Our family is deeply grateful to the President, Board of Trustees, and staff at WMHT for the beautiful tribute to Sylvia. Dedicating the Learning Center in her honor perfectly reflects her lifelong passion for education and helping others thrive,” said Rita Stephenson, Sylvia Bugg’s sister. “Knowing that future generations will learn and grow in a space bearing her name brings us comfort and immense joy. Sylvia would be deeply humbled and proud to see her love for learning live on. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness, generosity, and for keeping her bright legacy alive.”
Also in attendance was Susi Elkins, PBS Senior Vice President, Station Services, who led a keynote dinner address honoring WMHT’s Edison Society members following the dedication.
“Sylvia spent her career creating opportunities for new storytellers, especially young and diverse voices, so they could have a seat at the table. It is deeply fitting that WMHT has named its new learning center in her honor, so that future generations will find a door open to them,” said Susi Elkins, PBS Senior Vice President, Station Services.
WMHT is teaming up with Tech Valley High School's Innovative Solutions program—which pairs senior students with local business partners for a capstone project—to bring in student voices and help expand the Dr. Sylvia M. Bugg Learning Center.
