Troy Waterfront Farmers Market launches Online Ordering System

The Troy Waterfront Farmers Market today launched the TWFM Online Market, an online ordering system featuring items from more than 50 vendors, with more vendors expected to join soon.

TWFM Online allows customers to place orders twice a week for Wednesday and Saturday pickups at Carioto Produce Distribution Center located at 80 Cohoes Avenue, Green Island. Market leadership said partnering with Carioto was a great fit because the grocery supplier currently has ample refrigeration space to accommodate extra items from the farmers market.

“The Troy Waterfront Farmers Market has been planning to add an online ordering and pickup system for a while, but the current crisis sprang us into action,” said Zack Metzger, president of the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market. “Over the next few weeks TWFM Online will grow and evolve to allow the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market to provide another way to help meet local food needs during the COVID-19 crisis. We look forward to hearing from customers about what they want to see in our online market.”

Metzger noted that right now farmers are between seasons so fresh produce is light and customers should keep checking back with TWFM Online weekly as the number of items for sale will increase and change continuously as different crops come into season.

At the traditional Saturday market, customers must purchase items from each individual vendor. TWFM Online allows customers to order from multiple vendors -- without leaving their home -- adding items to a virtual shopping cart, with only one total payment by credit card required at checkout. All this with a safe contact-less pick up right to your vehicle. SNAP/EBT payments can be accommodated at pick up.

The market recognizes that this solution is hard for those without cars, and although arrangements can be made to pick up on foot, the market is looking at alternative long-term solutions for more accessible pick up.

You can find more about TWFM Online by following links from https://troymarket.org or directly at https://troymarket.localfoodmarketplace.com/. There you will review the participating vendors and what products they are offering. And you can sign up to be a customer.

WHEN TO ORDER, WHEN TO PICK UP

Online orders open at 4 p.m. on Friday and close on Monday at 9 a.m. for Wednesday pickup and close at 9 a.m. Thursday for Saturday pickup.

The ordering windows allow market vendors time to pick and prepare the customers' items for transport to Carioto, where TWFM staff must sort and package orders for contact-less pick up.

Initially, to minimize the flow of traffic, customer pickup times are set up by last name: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., A though F; 11 a.m. to Noon, G through L; Noon to 1 p.m., M through R; 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., S through Z. That may change in the future.

"Although the state has classified farmers markets as an essential activity, the traditional Troy Waterfront Farmers Market is closed and waiting to reopen safely. By providing TWFM Online, the market is offering customers a great alternative to get fresh local food, while taking extra steps to ensure their safety,” said Steve Ridler, manager of the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market. “This online ordering and contact-less pickup system is one of the safest ways to shop for now and we will continue to offer this option even when we open up again outside and even after the coronavirus crisis has passed.”

Ridler noted while the popular Saturday outdoor market has a wonderful urban street fair vibe, it can get rather crowded. By continuing to offer an online order and pickup system, the market will provide a way for customers to beat those crowds once things return to normal.

There is no minimum amount for orders and currently no additional fees attached for either the vendor or the customer, with overheads being met by the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market. Refunds are not available for those who forget to pick up their order, however customers may report missing or unsatisfactory items which will then be removed from their bill.

ADDITIONAL GROCERIES BY CARIOTO FOR PICKUP

Customers can also shop the Carioto online retail store for other products that can be ordered and picked up on the same trip. Visit: https://carioto.company.site/ (or look for the link at TWFM Online).

NO HOME DELIVERY AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME

TWFM Online is not providing home delivery services at this time.

FIND YOUR FAVORITE VENDOR

Over recent weeks, many of your favorite vendors have found ways to get fresh produce to their customers. TWFM provides weekly updates on how to find them at https://troymarket.org, through the market newsletter and on social media.

The market has also launched a searchable regional map with vendor locations, information and web links. https://www.troymarket.org/regional-map

OUTDOOR MARKET WILL RETURN IN NEAR FUTURE
Food and Function Over Festival

TWFM is working with officials from Rensselaer County and the City of Troy to find the right way to return safely to downtown Troy.

"We are working with the county health department and city officials to find the safest way to reopen with the very best social distancing and healthy practices for everyone,” Ridler said. “When the market does return to Troy, it will initially look very different.”

As an essential activity and a key part of the local food network, Ridler hopes to reopen the outdoor market in the near future. Along with new designs and safety measures the market will focus on food and function over festival. Ridler said county and city officials have expressed concern over the market's popularity, which draws loyal customers from far and wide. As a result, the market will be implementing several measures to reduce the number of customers who will be allowed in the market space at any time.

The online market and pickup will remain at Carioto in Green Island for the foreseeable future, which will also help reduce the number of customers in Troy, Ridler noted.
