Shaker Pointe Hosts Household Goods Drive to Benefit Refugees
Shaker Pointe at Carondelet, a senior living community in Watervliet, will host a household goods drive on Friday, May 18 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The items collected at the event will be donated to Refugees and Immigrants Support Services of Emmaus (RISSE). RISSE’s mission is to equip refugees and recent immigrants with language and literacy training and life skills support to effectively integrate to U.S. culture and the local community.
Those who have clean, gently used household items are encouraged to donate to the household goods drive. Specific items needed include: kitchenware and utensils, bed linens, towels, paper goods, cleaning products, and disposable diapers.
The challenges that immigrant and refugee families face while moving to a new country are difficult and may leave them lacking proper household goods needed to build a home. Fundraisers, like this one at Shaker Pointe, assist these families in building homes and lives in the U.S.
The Refugee Committee, which is hosting the event, is comprised of a group of Shaker Pointe residents that are dedicated to educating themselves and others on the refugee crisis as well as finding ways to help regionally-based refugees.
