Questar III BOCES District Superintendent nominated for membership in the Horace Mann League

Castleton, N.Y – Questar III BOCES District Superintendent Gladys I. Cruz has been nominated for membership in the Horace Mann League. She was nominated by Dr. James Harvey, an international public school leader and author of the Nation at Risk and other publications.

The Horace Mann League is an honorary society of leaders in public education who are committed to sustaining and improving a high-quality public education system for all students. The historic and prestigious national organization was founded by a leading group of educators in 1922 to reinforce the beliefs of Horace Mann, who was the founder of American public schools, that strong public schools are a foundation of democracy. The league believes that the public school system of the U.S. is an indispensable agency for the perpetuation of the ideals of democracy, and that public schools should be free, classless, non-sectarian, and open to all children.

In accepting the nomination, Cruz said, “The only way to protect our democracy is by developing critical thinkers and problem solvers who will stand up for the truth and all our democracy represents. We must continue to work together to protect our public school system as it is continuously being attacked. It is a true equalizer and gives hope to all students who come through our school doors.”

Recent activities of the league have included presentations at education conferences and recognition of organizations and individuals such as Valerie Strauss, journalist for the Washington Post as the 2022 “Outstanding Friend of Public Education” and Dr. Gloria Ladsen- Billings, professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin as the 2022 “Outstanding Public Educator” award.
