Phinney Design Group Wins Two American Institute of Architects (AIA) Design Awards

The award-winning architecture firm, known for its innovative and sustainable projects, takes home two more AIAENY design awards

Saratoga Springs, NY, June, 2022 - Phinney Design Group won two design awards from The American Institute of Architects Eastern New York (AIAENY) that were presented at an awards reception at the New York State Museum in Albany on Wednesday, June 14th. The architecture firm was recognized for its design work on Common Roots Brewing Company’s new brewery and taproom, and a private residence on Fourth Lake in Lake Luzerne, NY.
The American Institute of Architects is a professional organization for architects. AIA Eastern New York holds their annual design awards program to recognize exceptional architectural design with the purpose of honoring architects, clients, and consultants who work together to achieve design excellence. “It was an honor to be chosen to help Common Roots reimagine their future after such a tragedy; it quickly became a mission with Common Roots making the new design and rebuild analogous to The Phoenix. A new charitable organization, a marriage and deep friendships were born from the project.” said Michael Phinney. “To be selected to design a second home for a family we designed a home for, over 10 years ago, was a testament to the relationship we built the first time, now the next second generation, children of our initial clients chose to work with PDG to make their dreams of an Adirondack escape a reality”, said Jon Haynes of Phinney Design Group.

After a devastating fire destroyed the entire production and service operations at the immensely popular Common Roots Brewery in South Glens Falls New York, the owners were determined to rise from the ashes and rebuild in the village where the brand was born with increased production capacity and more inviting accommodations for patrons. The new Common Roots Brewery and Taproom provides a welcoming gathering space not previously available in the Village and has become a catalyst for the revitalization of the area. The brewery is a draw for beer enthusiasts throughout the region and created the stage for expanding the brewery’s distribution in the Northeast US and beyond. The rebuilding process forged profound relationships out of adversity and reinforced Common Roots’ existing emphasis on civic engagement and sustainability. The brewery is not only an amenity for the village but has spurred the launch of the Common Roots Foundation to support, assist, and elevate the community that has been their growing businesses’ lifeblood. Additional consultants who contributed to the design and construction of the project include Schoder Rivers Associates, Hesnor Engineering Associates, V&H Construction, Fronhofer Design, Adirondack P+M, K+J Electric, Trevett Millworks, Eclipse Networking Solutions, and Apex Solar Power.

Phinney Design Group designed a new waterfront Adirondack great camp that was built on Fourth Lake. Yearning for a weekend respite from city life with their growing family, their clients sought solace in the calm wilderness of the Adirondacks. When a large parcel became available, the owners eagerly pursued the opportunity to build their dream home. A panoramic wall of windows allows the owners to take full advantage of the stunning lake views. Within the lower level, a space was carefully designed to provide a place for the owners to relax and recharge. Inside the home, there is everything from a private spa (complete with a Halotherapy Room, Steam Room, Sauna Room, Yoga Room, Hot Tub, and Spa Shower) to an outside shower for use after swimming or exploring the sprawling property. Equipped with an abundance of green design elements throughout the home, this camp was designed with sustainability in mind. With its picturesque exterior, well-appointed interior, and accommodating size, this great camp is a true sanctuary designed to stand the test of time. Additional consultants who contributed to the design and construction of the home include J. Moeller Construction, SB Engineering, Environmental Design Partnership, and Toadflax Nursery.
