Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County Names New Board Members



Literacy Vokunteers of Rensselaer County has elected two new members to the Board of Directors: Susan d’Oelsnitz and Laura Salkowe.

Susan d’Oelsnitz first became active with LVORC as a volunteer member of the cast of the 2019 Famous Ladies Tea, depicting Helena Rubenstein. Susan is an Agency Services Representative with the NYS Department of Financial Services and holds a BA from State University of New York Potsdam with a major in English and a minor in Drama. Susan is also affiliated with Community Hospice, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Laura Salkowe began her involvement with LVORC as a tutor and special event volunteer, most recently serving as Volunteer Coordinator of the 2019 Literacy 5K Run/Walk. A resident of the Capital District since 2010, Laura received her undergraduate degree from the University at Albany. She works for the NYS Office of Mental Health with a focus on health policy and oversight of mental health services for Medicaid recipients. Laura says, “I was excited to learn about LVORC and all the programs this organization offers. I look forward to contributing and fulfilling this organization’s mission as an active board member.”

Since 1968, LVORC has provided free, confidential tutoring to adults in greater Rensselaer County. We train volunteers to help learners to improve their ability to read, write, speak and understand English; empower our learners to be advocates for themselves; and educate the community about literacy issues. We also offer math, computer, and financial literacy; English Literacy Civics and citizenship prep; and Everybody WINS! Power Lunch reading and mentoring for children. New volunteers are always welcome.

Hudson Valley Community College’s Viking Child Care Center has received an annual grant of $121,000 for up to four years that will be used for tuition subsidies for low-income families in the daycare center.
