Hatchet Hardware expands west to New York’s Mohawk Valley

Expanding their presence in upstate NY, Angelo, Giovanni, and Erika Grasso of Hatchet Hardware have announced that they will reopen the doors of 6133 NY-5 (Dutchtown Ace Hardware) as Hatchet Hardware of Palatine Bridge as their fourth location on May 29th, 2020.

The family owned and operated hardware store has come to Palatine Bridge in hopes of building a bond with the community and putting down roots in a new area. The Grasso’s opened their first hardware store in New York’s capital district in Brunswick, NY in 2014, then expanded with the purchase of Pfeil Hardware in downtown Troy in 2016, and on August 1st, 2019 they purchased Philips Hardware in Waterford. Hatchet Hardware of Waterford has remained open to the community during renovations which will be completed by September 2020 with the addition of a greenhouse.

Each member of the Grasso family trio focuses on different aspects of their business model to make things work. Giovanni and Erika Grasso take on the day to day of operating and maintaining their retail stores while Angelo focuses on the business planning and financial aspects of the business. The Grasso brothers have been in the hardware business for over 30 years. Angelo and Giovanni’s father, Angelo Grasso Sr., started out as a locksmith in 1974 and made the transition to the hardware business in 1979.

John Macci and Laurel Rowledge opened Dutchtown Ace Hardware in 2007 and have been in the hardware business for 13 years. John and Laurel decided after a long career they would like to retire in 2020. The Grasso’s have been working to explore and expand into different regions of New York state, so it was a perfect match.

John and Laurel said, “We thank the customers for your business and your support. It has been our pleasure to work with you through the years. We are excited for our future and the future for Hatchet Hardware of Palatine Bridge!”. Angelo says, “John and Laurel made this process very smooth and made us feel welcomed. We are excited to join the community”.

“It has always been very exciting and fun for us to learn about and immerse ourselves in the communities when we open up a new shop, but we think that Palatine Bridge is going to be the most exciting because we’ve never been this far west. We can’t wait to learn about the area.”, Erika followed.

ACE Hardware is a co-op therefore all locations are individually owned and operated giving Erika and Giovanni the opportunity to get creative with their own shops. All three current Hatchet Hardware locations are similar in carrying all hardware and home improvement basics, building supplies, and construction tools, but unique in their specialty goods sections which are curated by Erika and Taylor Clement - the buyer and merchandiser at all three current locations. The family’s goal has always been to break the mold of what an average hardware store is like and hope to continue the tradition with this new location in Palatine Bridge
