The City of Troy is seeking applications for the position of: Radio Dispatcher

Department: Public Utilities Salary: CSEA Grade 5, $36,330 After One Year $38,146 Application Deadline: Until filled

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position involves semi-skilled clerical work controlling the base radio station and keeping in constant radio contact with all mobile units. Work includes significant responsibility for taking telephone complaints and emergency calls and relaying the necessary data to responsible superiors in the mobile units. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Streets/Sanitation Supervisor. All assignments are performed in accordance with detailed instructions. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: • Maintains constant radio contact with all mobile radio units; • Checks all units at the beginning and end of the work day; • Takes all emergency calls and expedites crews to emergency areas via radio; • Answers telephone complaints and informs residents as to the cause of interrupted service; • Keeps records of all radio transmissions and complaints; • Relays all pertinent information received via radio to all superiors; • Performs related work as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the Public Works/Public Utilities operations; ability to speak fluently and coherently; ability to maintain simple records; ability to understand and follow oral instructions; ability to write legibly; ability to establish good working relationships with the general public; ability to work in emergency situations under stress; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma. The selected qualified candidate will be required to take an exam administered by the NYS Dept. of Civil Service and become reachable on the resulting eligible list to secure permanent status in the title. If not a Troy resident, the successful candidate will have ninety (90) days to move into the City and maintain residency.
