Local School Celebrates In-Person Opening with New Tradition

(Rensselaer, N.Y.) - Students at the Doane Stuart school in Rensselaer gathered around the flagpole earlier this week to celebrate the start of the new school year with a new tradition! For the first time ever, they raised their own school flag! The flag depicting the nearly 50-year old emblem that identifies Doane Stuart, is a “symbol of what our community stands for…” said Cecil Stodghill, Head of School, as he addressed the crowd, “This symbol brings us all together. We raise the flag to show our unity...the strength of our community.” After a rousing speech, students cheered in excitement and Mr. Stodghill introduced Doane Stuart’s Student Body President, Icesis Hinkson-Serrano. Miss Hinkson-Serrano had the honor of raising the flag. When asked how she felt to be the one to raise the flag for the first time, Miss Hinkson-Serrano said, “I felt really proud to be the one starting off this tradition. Now the whole Rensselaer community can see that we are here! Doane Stuart is a part of Rensselaer!”

The Doane Stuart School is a co-ed, Early Childhood through Grade 12, college preparatory school located right off of I-90 in Rensselaer. The school remained open for in-person learning throughout the 20-21 school year and intends the same for 21-22. Small class sizes foster open discussion and student-teacher collaboration. The Doane Stuart School has a long history of engaging students in service learning as well as embracing diversity in all forms.

The mission of Doane Stuart is education for students from every quarter. In a college preparatory context, where the joy of discovery is valued, Doane Stuart emphasizes serious study, educates to social responsibility, and lays the foundation for a strong faith.
