The City of Troy is seeking applications for the position of Youth Services Specialist The pay grade and salary for this position is: CSEA Grade 10, Starting Salary $40,282
Distinguishing Features of the Class: This position involves the teaching or conduct of some youth specialty as scheduled with considerable freedom as to approach, method and subject material. This position may involve the actual conduct of the activity or the organization and initiation of activity groups, and the instruction of recreation leaders, recreation assistants, and recreation aides whether volunteer or 3rd party participants in the manner in which the details of the activities are to be carried out; supervision may be exercised over subordinate level personnel; does related work as required.
Typical Work Activities: (illustrative only) Coordinates the planning, provision, and coordination of youth service programs associated with city facilities and programs. Reaches out to and engages the youth and youth organizations within the community to ascertain their needs, enlist their support, and engage them in the process. Monitors, reports and inventories all youth service programs to ensure long-term sustainability for the city youth to provide a consolidated resource for all residents for youth programming resources. Network with other organizations to assist in the coordination of youth services. Conducts league or tournament games in accordance with the official rules of the game; Plans with and aids both city and community recreation leaders, assistants, and aides in the organization of specialty activities; Creates and recommends publicity for special events; Requisitions needed supplies and materials; Assumes responsibility for and distributes supplies; Maintains discipline; Keeps records and makes reports; Gives instruction to recreation leaders, assistants, and aides so that they can instruct the work of the activities to the program participants; Completes daily, weekly, and monthly financial records; Produces monthly financial reports concerning the recreation program activities. Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics: Ability to read and write, computer skills, keep simple records, perform light manual labor, ability to give and receive simple instructions, must be able to get along with others. Good knowledge of the methods of group instruction used in the specialty activity; the ability to establish a teacher-pupil relationship with the group as may be required by the particular activity; the ability to work with groups of all ages; ability to stimulate interest in the special activity; ability to speak before groups of people in an interesting and informative manner; ability to establish working relationships with community, education and youth organizations; good knowledge of a variety of youth programs and funding opportunities; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Minimum Qualifications: A. Graduation from regionally accredited or New York State Registered College or University with a Bachelor’s Degree in the Social Science or a related field; OR B. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State Registered College or University with an Associate’s Degree in the Social Sciences or a related field and two (2) years of experience working with children, youth, and families; OR C. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four (4) years of experience working with children, youth, and families. Posted 02/16/2021
Special Requirements: At time of appointment, candidate must possess a valid NYS driver’s license, and maintain such throughout duration of employment in the title. At time of appointment, candidate must have successfully completed a background investigation. The selected qualified candidate will be required to take an exam administered by the NYS Dept. of Civil Service and become reachable on the resulting eligible list to secure permanent status in the title. If not a Troy resident, the successful candidate will have ninety (90) days to move into the City and maintain residency.
