The City of Troy is seeking applications for the position of: Water Maintenance Person The pay grade and salary range for this position is: CSEA Grade 8, Starting Salary $37,331
Distinguishing Features of the Class: This work involves a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and repair duties in connection with the operation of the municipal water distribution system. In such operations as caulking, tapping, and installation work, employees in this class assist more skilled workers who would bear final responsibility for such projects. Employees in this class operate one or more types of light automotive equipment and perform manual tasks in connection with such operations. Incumbents of this class either work as members of maintenance crews or in the case of less skilled projects may serve as lead persons with onthe-job supervision of other workers. Does related work as required.
Typical Work Activities: (Illustrative only) Assists in the installation and maintenance of fire hydrants, gate valves and water mains; Helps to make taps to and caulks joints of water mains; Tests for and repairs leaks in mains; Takes part in flushing operations and clears hydrants of snow and ice; Removes, repairs and resets hydrants; Repacks gate valves; Participates in excavation and back fill activities in connection with above work; May operate tapping machines, pumps, compressors, air hammers and caulking guns; May operate a truck in connection with above work. Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics: Working knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and principles involved in maintenance of water distribution systems; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to withstand heavy labor for extended periods; industry; dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and one (1) year of full-time experience in a building trade such as carpentry, plumbing, construction, or a related field. Special Requirements: Incumbent must possess a NYS Commercial Learner Permit at the time of appointment. Incumbent must obtain a NYS Commercial Driver’s License within six (6) months of the date of appointment to the title and maintain such throughout duration of employment in the title.
